Trama
Philip Carey (Leslie Howard), un pittore fallito storpio diventato in seguito studente di medicina, si innamora follemente di Mildred (Bette Davis) che sembra ricambiarlo, nonostante continui a flirtare anche con altri uomini. Mildred decide però di sposare un altro, ma quando resta incinta viene abbandonata e fino alla sua morte continuerà a ricorrere a Philip nei momenti di maggiore difficoltà, lasciandolo poi ogni volta nella più completa disperazione.
