連環殺手「復仇者」在倫敦殺害多名金髮美女，此時一個神秘男子來到此地想租下一間房子，而這名男子有個怪習慣，就是每當濃霧降臨的夜晚他就會出門，而且他房內還有珍藏一張金髮女子的照片。 房東夫婦的女兒是一位金髮模特兒，和偵辦「復仇者」案件的警探交往，而他強烈懷疑這個神秘男子就是他要逮捕的兇手！ 片中「房客戴著手套的右手在樓梯扶手上慢慢下滑」令觀眾難忘的鏡頭，被執導該片的導演希區柯克，稱為是在默片時代替聲音的拍攝手法。
